Happy art crawl day! Some very, very, very cool things happening tonight. Joe Stable’s 70s artwork archive, a confession poetry booth, art objects in mini boxes, and more. So proud of the artists who spend days, weeks, months creating and then are so willing to share it with us. We are blessed to live in such a creative community, let’s “show up” (in many ways!) for artists and support them the best we can.
Sheldon Storey’s practice centres around a multidisciplinary approach to installation-based works. Primarily inclined to found materials and objects with a desirable focus on the familiar pull of familial objects to conjure subjective notions of home, experience, sexuality, mental health and relationships. Continuing a studio practice which integrates collecting both natural and found materials of curiosity to instill these ideas of wonder and observation of the peculiar body and its spaces. Toying with the connotations of masculinity and labour much of my current materiality centres around this implication of workforce and the blue collar. Raised in rural Ontario with parents of the trades Storey learned that hard work was sometimes the only work available and the objects and tools used allow for the patina of a hard day’s work to wear through—challenging such notions as gender, class, and sexuality.
Change of plans, folks! April’s event has been moved to Thursday, April 1 due to the Easter long weekend. (No, this is not an April Fools Joke!) So far, we have confirmed events by Joe Stable at ACME Art, Kelly Albin at Blue Frogs Legs Studio, Sheldon Storey at Atelier Ludmila and more. Please check our website and Facebook event as we add more listings. If you’re an artist who wants to participate in April’s crawl, please get in touch as soon as possible.
If you weren’t able to make it to the art crawl last Friday (or just enjoyed it so much you want to see it again!) Atelier Ludmila has their entire show available to see online. John Marris: Material Dialogue runs until March 28 and features prints, pinch pots, hand-made tiles, and mosaics. These objects come out of the artist’s meditative practice of forming and expressing with clay, and reflect the natural environment in everyday objects. (Link to the show in our bio!) Rather see it in person? Atelier Ludmila is open during weekdays by appointment and weekends 11-5.
We made it to Friday! Doors open this evening at 6 PM. Please wear a mask and come in groups of 5 or less.
Tomorrow is the next art crawl! Check out exciting new work from Kelly Albin @bluefrogslegs as part of her Travelology show. We may not be able to travel much right now, but her paintings inspired by her trips to Jamaica and Mexico might just tide us over.
